About the event
Join the Broads Society for our Third Annual Lecture with speaker, Dr Andrew Tullett, on the subject of 'Drainage Mills in the Broads - Icons in a Threatened Landscape'.
Lecture:
About 70 drainage mills remain in the Broads, but all are redundant, and most are in various states of decay. What should happen to them now that the critical work of controlling water levels is done by electric pumps? They may be iconic features of the Broads landscape, but should they be protected at all costs, or allowed to fade away gracefully? Can we afford to lose the stories they tell about the people who created the Broads? Some say mills have shifted from draining water to draining resources, while others insist their heritage is priceless. Our speaker will explore the challenge of preserving the human character of Britain’s most important freshwater wetland.
